Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem is a casino located in the Bethlehem Works development site in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania in the Lehigh Valley region of eastern Pennsylvania, in the United States.
The casino is owned, operated, and constructed by the Las Vegas Sands corporation. It is one of five stand-alone casinos that was awarded a slots license by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board on December 20, 2006. The casino was slated to open in July 2008, but demolition took longer than expected due to the heavy concrete foundations of the old steel building. Its opening was delayed until the second quarter of 2009. The first concrete for the complex, which is located on the former Bethlehem Steel land on the South side of the city, was poured on November 15, 2007.
The casino opened May 22, 2009. In the winter of 2009-2010, the Casino was granted a license for table games which allowed the casino to expand to include 180 table games of Poker, Blackjack and Craps. Table games began operation on July 18, 2010. The Sands Hotel opened on May 27, 2011. The Sands Bethlehem is the only property in the company to end 2014 with a profit, doing better than Sands’ Vegas and Asia properties.

A group from Philadelphia is accused of using thousands of dollars in counterfeit money last year at Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem and four other Pennsylvania casinos.
Kiara Kristin Purnell, Mahagany White, Nieem Johnson and Marcus Davis allegedly passed a total of 150 fake bills in the spring of 2019 at the Sands (now Wind Creek Bethlehem), Parx, SugarHouse (now Rivers Casino Philadelphia), Valley Forge Resort and Harrah’s casinos.
Three have been arrested, and authorities are still looking for the 31-year-old Purnell.
The four each face charges of forgery, theft by deception, possessing instruments of crime and conspiracy in Bucks County Court. The charges were filed by the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office and Pennsylvania State Police Bureau of Gaming Enforcement.Sands Casino Bethlehem Shopping Mall
Surveillance video showed the four using the counterfeit money at various gaming tables, investigators said, but authorities also discovered the printing setup in a Philadelphia hotel room, where evidence showed $1 bills were bleached then printed to look like $100.
The bills all had the same serial number, authorities said.
The man who allegedly rented the room was only identified by the initials F.P. in court papers, and is wanted in Virginia for allegedly using fake bills with the same serial number in Stafford County.
Authorities said they first learned about the fake money in early April 2019, when a man and woman used fake $100 bills with the same serial number over a weekend at the Parx, SugarHouse and Harrah’s casinos.
Surveillance video showed Purnell and White first using the fake bills at blackjack tables at SugarHouse, and that they arrived and left the casino together in a Pontiac Aztec with a “dead” license plate number, Pennsylvania State Police said.
Video also showed Johnson using the fake bills around the same time at Parx, Harrah’s and Valley Forge, and using the same car as Purnell and White, state police said.
Later in April, Johnson and Davis allegedly used the fake bills at the Sands, which was purchased in May 2019 by Wind Creek Hospitality.
Finally, on April 20, 2019, Johnson, White and Purnell traveled to Atlantic City’s Hard Rock Casino, investigators said.
Johnson tried to use the counterfeit $100 bills to cash in at a blackjack table, court papers say. A dealer became suspicious and called for a supervisor, who called security, authorities said.
Johnson gave security his ID, but tried to grab it before fleeing the casino, the documents allege. New Jersey State Police said they reviewed security footage, and saw White and Purnell play “minimally” at the Hard Rock gaming tables and then cash out.
In an interview in January, Purnell reportedly told troopers she did not knowingly use fake bills and, if she did, it was by accident because they were change from a previous transaction.
A trooper asked Purnell what bill she paid with in order to get $100 bills as change.
“Purnell was unable to answer that question,” state police said in court records.
White, 33, and Davis, 44, were arrested Wednesday in the case. Davis is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail and White is being held on 10% of $100,000 bail in Bucks County prison, while they each wait for a preliminary hearing.
Johnson, 37, is being held in lieu of 10% of $65,000 bail in a Philadelphia correctional facility in an unrelated drug case, court records say. He was not arraigned in the Bucks County case as of Saturday morning.
